What handheld devices can use the Kinnexus handheld interface?

Generally, any cell phone, Pocket PC, Palm Pilot, or other handheld device which is WAP-enabled -- WAP is for Wireless Application Protocol -- can access the Kinnexus interface. Telescan keeps no list of WAP-enabled devices and makes no guarantee as to the suitability of any device. (But we haven't yet found one that should work, but doesn't.)

Please note: Telescan cannot provide technical support for your cell phone or other handheld devices. You will need to consult your users manual or your device's technical support resources to learn how to browse the World Wide Web, how to enter a URL (Web address), how to select a field or button on the screen, etc.

Note also that the WAP interface is enabled differently on different devices. Identical functions can be accessed in different ways. For example:

  • When logging in to the Kinnexus WAP interface, "Login" may appear as a button on the screen or as a menu item on a menu accessed by a button on the device.
  • You may be able to enter your username and password, for example, directly in the fields on the login screen, or a separate text screen may pop up for data entry.

  • You may be able to enter your username and password, for example, directly in the fields on the login screen, or a separate text screen may pop up for data entry.

Here's how to proceed.

First, enter and go to the appropriate URL. (You'll probably want to save it as a favorite, so you don't have to type it all the time.)

  • Okanagan Mainline [BC] Real Estate Board: mls.omrebmls.com/waplogon.wml#login
  • Warren County [NY] MLS: www.wcarmls.com/waplogon.wml#login
  • Ashland [OH] Board of Realtors: www.ashland.kx20.com/Ashland/waplogon.wml#login
  • Washington County [UT] Board of Realtors: washco.infowest.com/waplogon.wml#login
  • (If yours is missing from the list, have your system administrator e-mail it to support@kinnexus.com.)

Second, login with your Kinnexus username and password. (Neither is case-sensitive.)

Third, choose the search type. (address / mls number / area / listing agent name)

Fourth, enter search criteria. Note that at present the Kinnexus WAP interface allows only active and contingent residential listings to be searched. Also, the price is in round thousands of dollars; do not enter the last three zeroes.

Fifth, if more than one listing is found, select the one you want from the list.

Sixth, view the listing information and photo as desired.

After an automatic software update, any attempt to start Kinnexus results in a notice, "There are outstanding packs."

Ordinarily, after receiving a software update (pack), Kinnexus will close itself, apply the pack, and restart itself, warning you once in the process. However, if Kinnexus cannot update one or more of the files it attempts to update, the process will not complete. Starting Kinnexus will result in the outstanding packs warning.

This may happen if a Kinnexus process is still running on the computer or if a file Kinnexus wants to replace is marked "read only" in folder in which Kinnexus is installed. Follow these steps as necessary to correct the problem. After each step, if Kinnexus does not try to restart itself, try to start it manually. If the error persists, close Kinnexus and proceed to the next step.

  1. Close any instances of Kinnexus which are running on your computer.
  2. Using the Processes tab of the Windows Task Manager, select and end any "kxupdate.exe" or "kinnexus.exe" processes which may still be running. (Get to the Task Manager either by right-clicking in an empty space in the Windows task bar and selecting "Task Manager" on the menu, or by pressing ctrl-alt-delete on the keyboard and selecting Task Manager.) Close Task Manager. (Another way to accomplish this entire step is to reboot -- shut down and restart -- the computer.)
  3. Most Kinnexus users are not using replication, but if you are (or accidentally installed it), a kxserver.exe process may be running. It cannot be stopped with Task Manager. Instead, go to the Windows Control Panel and choose "Services." (If that choice is not available, choose "Administrative Tools," then "Services.") Find the Kinnexus Server service and stop it.
  4. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, go to the c:\kinnexus20 folder (regardless of version). If it does not exist, look for c:\Program Files\Kinnexus instead. (If you're using replication, look for c:\kxserver.) In the folder look for a file called "kxupdate.log." If it exists, open it and examine it. It may identify the specific file which the update process could not replace. If it does, find that file in c:\kinnexus20, right-click on it, and choose "Properties." If the read-only property is set, unset it and save the change. Close Properties.
  5. If there is no kxupdate.log file, or if it does not identify a problem with a specific file, change the view type to "Details" (View | Details). Then right-click on one of the column headers and select "Attributes" to add the needed column to the display. Examine all the files in the folder. If any have the attribute "R" (which may be listed with other attributes, such as "A"), remove that attribute for that file using the process in Step 4.

If none of these measures solves the problem, call for technical support.

Does the Kinnexus 3.0 software update including new mapping data?

No, it is purely a program update. However, as of late March 2006 when this is written, Telescan has received new mapping data for the United States and is in the (hopefully brief) process of preparing it for distribution to MLS customers within the United States.

I just upgraded to Kinnexus 3.0, and I no longer see the Photo Book as expected. Where is it?

The Photo Book is still where it was in previous versions, but it has been renamed. It is now called the "Document Book."

The change reflects the new ability in 3.0 to include other types of documents with listing. Photos work as they have always done, but if the system is configured to allow, for example, an Excel spreadsheet to be attached to a listing, clicking on that document in the Document Book will open the document in Microsoft Excel, if it is installed on the user's computer.
